Where Beatlemania quietly began!
A Story Worth Celebrating
The City of Benton holds one of the most remarkable and authentic Beatles stories in America. In 1963 — just months before the Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon — George Harrison quietly visited Benton to spend time with his sister Louise, who lived right here in town. At that moment, the Beatles were still unknown in the United States, so George wandered Benton like any ordinary visitor. He browsed local shops, bought a record player and guitar, met and performed with area musicians, and enjoyed the kind of peaceful anonymity he would never experience again.
The First Beatles Song Ever Played on American Radio
During George’s stay, Louise brought George and a Beatles record to WFRX in West Frankfort (the town just south of Benton). DJ Marcia Schafer played “From Me to You,” making southern Illinois the place where the first Beatles song ever hit the American airwaves. Long before Beatlemania swept the nation, this region helped spark the earliest flicker of what would become a cultural explosion. That very turntable and associated radio equipment now resides in Benton.
Why have a Beatles Festival?
Benton wasn’t just a stop on George Harrison’s travels — it was
the first American town to welcome a Beatle. It’s one of the few places where George could simply be himself before fame transformed his life. 'Here Comes the Fest' honors that history and celebrates Benton’s unique role in music culture. We're eager to share a story no other town can claim.
A Festival Rooted in Real History
Benton’s Beatles connection is genuine, documented, and unforgettable. Hosting a festival isn’t just a fun idea — it’s a chance to shine a spotlight on a piece of American music history that started right here. Come and be part of it!
